Further reading

These are the books I have found which make the case for simple design. I will add more as I find them.

Giles Colborne's Simple and Usable: Web, mobile, and interaction design.

Ken Segall's Insanely Simple: The Obsession That Drives Apple's Success.

John Maeda's The Laws of Simplicity.

Other skills mentioned in this book

To learn to write, read Everybody Writes by Ann Handley.

The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst will teach you everything you need to know about typography. If you want something lighter, On Web Typography by Jason Santa Maria covers a lot of the same topics.

If you're new to graphic design and want to learn a few practical qualities that will make any page look better, read The Non-Designer's Design Book by Robin Williams.
